my sound corner
Hello! My name is Jan-Philip, and this is the sound corner of my website :-).
In 2013, I started a DJ project. This has given me so much joy, and deeply intensified my relationship to music. Through careful selection, mindful listening, and countless deeply emotional musical experiences I never stopped growing my appreciation for the aesthetics and sub-cultural aspects of sound design and music production. I got inspired by my favorite producers and labels.
Music and sounds are just so fascinating. A lovely topic to spend time on. To have conversation about.
Long ago, friends have encouraged me to dive into music production. For several years, however, it felt like too big of an endeavor. Another big construction site? I was not confident enough, and assumed that I might not get anywhere. That it would be ‘just another side project that I can’t bring into a satisfactory state’. Passion starved by expectation. That didn’t feel right either.
In 2022, I made a life decision: to worry less, to finally dive in. I started with a sound design course by 343 Labs. I am thankful to Peter Trimbacher for helping me overcome the ‘blank page syndrome’. I learned so much in little time and was hooked. I found a starting point, the origin of a journey.
Now I try to not have expectations. It’s about the journey through soundscapes, workflows, and discovering music through a new angle: the perspective of producing.
If along that journey here and there an artifact drops – a tiny piece of music that can be shared with the world: wonderful. But if that’s not happening that’s ok.
Often, I need to remind myself that there are endless possibilities in music production. As a beginner, it sometimes seems like “I cannot contribute anything new”. But that is not true. It’s hard work, for sure. There are no shortcuts. But in the infinite universe of music – in the musical space – there are more gaps than content. That’s the nature of infinity.
To me, writing is an essential part of learning. This blog is where I intend to publish notes. These notes are mainly for myself. If some of my ramblings happen to find readers other than myself that makes me happy, too.
